Default Working in Herndon living in...

I just moved to NoVA from Roanoke and have been renting an apartment in Herndon down the street from my office. I'm now looking to buy a place and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'm looking more Loudon and Prince William than Fairfax, but I'm not really sure what the "good areas" are. I'm think TH more than anything, trying to avoid SFH (avoiding yardwork) and condos (low resale or so I've heard). Trying to stay around the 250-300K mark but not really sure if that's possible...so if anyone out there has any advice please share.

Thanks!

Why are you in such a rush to buy right now? Prices are falling and will undoubtedly continue to fall throughout this year and most likely even more in 2009/2010.

You have an apartment right next to your job, thus no commute whatsoever. You have to ask yourself if you really want to trade that for an older townhome in a less desireable area that will create a 45+ minute commute to/from work. Plus, if you buy now, be prepared for your home to be worth 10-20% less in the very near future. You may be stuck in that home for up to a decade if you buy now.

Reston has some nice townhouses right next to the Town Center, but I'm not sure if they are in your price range. Ask a realtor, because you might find some bargains right now. Cascades has nice properties, too.

I would go to the local library and look at the Loudoun Easterner and the Reston Observer to get an idea of the places you might like. Those newspapers are free--you can get copies in several paces, as well as the library. If you read through the archives you will find several comments about living in Herndon and Sterling Park. IMO, those are areas are dubious--you will be much better off in Cascades or Reston.

Welcome to Virginia!
