When looking at driving commute times for a house near Potomac Mills Mall to the Pentagon, it varies a lot by time of day. The distance is 22.6 miles. At 7:30AM, according to Google Maps it takes 35 min to 1 hr 5 minutes. At 7:30PM, according to Google Maps it takes 22-28 minutes. If I pickup a slug and use the HOV lane, then what impact does this have on my commute time?
Thanks!

Using the HOV/Express Lanes you're looking at 35-45 minutes.

The regular lanes would be another story.

Curious for those who have picked up slugs/ or sluggers themselves? How much time does that process add? Is there a line of cars that takes a while to queue? Are sluggers standing in line for a while before a ride? Is this all dependent on the location and destination?

It depends. Location, time, day of week, weather, luck are all factors. You could go to exact same spot, same time, every Friday and you'd get wildly different times.

Best is to be flexible. Plan ahead for backup plans. Sometimes it works very fast and other times slugs wait nearly an hour.

Yep!

There are times when there are no slugs, and there is a wait/line to pick them up.

For a short stint, my husband worked in Arlington. He would pop over to the Pentagon around 4:15pm to pick up slugs going to the Horner Road lot. Sometimes there would be a line of 4 or 5 cars waiting for slugs to come out. And if each car needs two slugs, the wait time could be longer than desired.

Despite its unpredictability (both for driver and passenger), slugging remains popular along the I-95 corridor. I've wondered what impact (if any) the conversion of the I-395 HOV lanes to HOT lanes will have on slugging.

If anything, it gives drivers an option to just pay the toll if they don't want to wait. I haven't slugged in years, and currently have my own carpool. The volume on the HOT lanes is comparable to when it was just HOV.
