I lived in Fairfax and worked in Old Town Alexandria with pretty standard business hours and the commute was hell. I lived closer to the Chantilly side of Fairfax, so I took 66 to 495 to 1. 66 was awful, but 495 was all right each way I was going. Traffic getting into and out of Alexandria was an additional challenge. It's usually pretty jammed up. I remember several times waiting over 1/2 an hour just to get out, which usually took me only 10 minutes! If your boyfriend commuted to Fairfax, it would be REALLY bad traffic on 495 (he would be with all the Tyson's people), but 66 would probably be fine.

I tried other ways, like 236, but that didn't save any time because you have to fight your way out of Alexandria around all the people trying to get on the Beltway. I would suggest seriously looking into an area that would be good for both of you. I spent over 2 1/2 hours a day in my car and I wouldn't wish that on you.

Good luck!

flyhigh -- Old Town is wonderful, but can be really pricey.

Mason Hall is pretty affordable, but it's on the North end of Old Town, a bit out of walking distance. You'd probably have to catch the DASH to the Braddock Metro, or to downtown. Bernstein Management Corporation: Residential Properties: Virginia: Mason Hall (broken link)

This is a pretty good resource for finding some condos for rent/sale in the area; I've seen a few nice ones from time to time in Old Town. McEnearney - Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and Maryland Real Estate Services

Otherwise, Craigslist.com is great for finding things in the Old Town area to rent, usually private owners who are looking to rent out their condo or house and are much better to deal with than the big management companies.

Good luck with your search!
