With all of the commute issues in NoVA, I'm curious to know if the HOV lanes make much of a difference. When someone says it will take 90 minutes to get from Centreville to DC, does that take into consideration the HOV lane?

In the Northern Va. area, there are just too many cars to fit on the road. All it takes is one fender-bender to tie up traffic for hours. Rubberneckers are the main culprit! At peak travel times, the HOV lanes are jam-packed, but still tend to go faster than the regular lanes,(which isn't speedy by any means!) Sorry!

Ditto what cb said, I have headed out of town on I-66 before and even the HOV lanes were moving at VERY slow speeds. There is no real way to avoid traffic in this area, you might find a "short-cut" here and there but it will likely never save you much time, if any. The roads in the DC area simply aren't adequate to support the already massive and constantly growing population.

Also in case you didn't already know, 66 inbound to DC from Centreville is HOV only from the Beltway on in so if your commute takes you that way you will either need to find a buddy to join or find another route.

Luckily, I have an answer for that. My wife might be taking my son to daycare so he would count for that second person.
