Default Woodlawn Mews Neighborhood/Alexandria

This seems to be located in between Pole Road by the Pole Road Park and Richmond Highway. Does anyone know if this is a good neighborhood? If so, how close is it to the Metro to Foggy Bottom. Thanks for your help.

I live off Route 1 (Richmond Highway) myself. It's an interesting area because some wealthy communities are smack dab next to not-so-glossy neighborhoods. Generally speaking, but not exclusively, communities east of route 1 towards the riverfront tend to be most desirable. But there are some decent neighborhoods on the west side as well.

All of that said, I can't say that I'm specifically familiar with Woodlawn Mews. My guesstimate would be that it's "okay" at the very least. Looking at a map, it appears that it's right next to Fort Belvoir. I'd bet that you would have a lot of military as neighbors which would be a stabilizing factor.

It's about 8 miles mostly north on Route 1 to the Huntington Metro (Yellow Line). Get off at King Street and transfer to the Blue Line train heading towards Largo Town Center. Allowing for transfers, your train travel time should be about 30-35 minutes.

I live in the neighborhood beside called, "The Villages of Mount Vernon."
If you do live there, live along the back row of town homes with the nature reserve in the back. It's much quieter back there and away from the traffic on Sacramento.

Some of those town homes are very cute and the people in that immediate area are nice. Although Rt. 1 is patched with low-income apartments and CRIME. It's not as bad as the dangerous parts of the city but there are a lot of assaults and larcenies. I would not go outside at night.

There is A LOT of CRIME.
Check out the map.
Crime Watch - Fairfax County, Virginia

Despite this, if you can stand a few years, I believe it's a good investment to buy. With Ft. Belvior building the new hospital already, people should be moving in around 2011 or so.

It's not the best but it's not the worst.

Default Woodlawn Mews neghborhood

I moved to this place a year ago from Fairfax (old town). My friends warned me about crime etc., saying how much WORSE it would be comparing to Fairfax where I lived since 1994. I took a risk. Well - to tell you the truth I don't see ANYTHING bad here. As matter of fact - I find the neighborhood much nicer than in Fairfax. Fairfax, with its ridiculously hight property prices, is invaded by newly-rich. It is not friendly at all.
There are quite a few things I particularly like.
First - living in the city, with the Rt1 within 1/4 mile distance, and a bus stop right under the windows of my house, STILL - the air is MUCH fresher and fragrant with river and trees. Even in the heat of the summer, driving down from Landmark where I work, I can feel the difference - the FRESHNESS. Birds, and LOTS of them - of different kinds - that tells one about the ecological conditions here, in Woodlawn.
Second - the neighbors are very quiet, and very friendly. Haven't seen any police arriving to the houses (had seen plenty the last couple years in Fairfax).
Third - the water that comes out of the pipes here in Alexandria is considerably better. Why, I had to put numerous filters in my Fairfax house, and still suffered from dry skin and shedding hair. I forgot these problems here - and there are not filters in my house now, the water comes right from the City.
Another: Labor for hire - whatever projects one has to do, it is easy to find honest and hard working people HERE. The last 4 years in Fairfax - I could not find anyone to do a spring cleaning of my yard, no matter how much money they would be offered, there simply NO ONE LEFT to do simple work there, everyone is too freaking wealthy! Even teenagers.
So, here you are - and the development of Fort Belvoir facilities is on the top of it all.
