I am not at all surprised. That's their culture/tradition.

I am mystified, I haven't really noticed any. I have a good sized tree next to my windows and haven't seen any. My TH doesn't have a yard. That may be a factor.

But then again, I've been working 9-10 hours a day this week, so maybe I'm looking with fatigued eyes.

I haven't seen any yet in Ashburn, Sterling, or Arlington. I'm not sure why.

I only saw two this week but they are all over the place today. As I stopped to watch one emerge from its shell on a tree two more started crawling up my bare legs and another one flew onto my head and crawled around in my hair. There was a faint chorus of them in my neighborhood last night but they are roaring today.

I started a thread in the main VA forum for additional reporting. Thanks for the link Flamingo13.

They burrowed in tree root areas (if not the tree roots themselves - I'm not that "up" on them) - if you live in a new development where trees were ripped out, etc. - that might explain it?

I've heard the "chorus" the last couple days but it's nothing like it was yrs. ago, it's been more distant. I did again today knock off those creepy shell things - only about 20 this time.

Nope, my neighborhood was mostly built in the 50s. The 60 to 70 year old white oak in my yard is collecting the most shells.

Good thing I like cicadas or having big bugs crawling up me would really creep me out. I used to collect the shells as a tyke and show them to my Grandma and Great Grandma. My Grandma would tell me stories about how they lived underground and only came up every 17 years and the great swarms she had seen in her life.

I was living in MD and working up by Andrews Air Force Base during the 1987 breakout. I've never seen anything like that. Two people could stand side by side and have to shout to be heard above the cicadas. When they flew in swarms they turned the air green and splattered my windshield so badly I had to turn on the wipers and run the windshield washer.

The sound of cicadas is the song of summer to me and one of the things I missed the most when living outside the USA.
