Um, New Hampshire. J/K. Are you limited to a certain area in NOVA or are you talking about anywhere in the state of VA? little more info would help.

It might be helpful if you describe your student or the type of environment you are seeking.

Are gifted/talented programs most important? Athletics? The arts? Also a price range since high schools are geographically determined. No point in suggesting Langley as the perfect fit if your housing budget tops out at $350,000.

Are you including private/parochial schools? If so, tuition range and how far are you willing to drive the student to and from school and activities? Again, no point in suggesting St. Stephen/St. Agnes if you live in Western Loudoun.

Not sure if that is sarcasm but I will say our children did go to boarding school. Contrary to popular belief, they're not all for the "problem children". The biggest advantage to any private school is the quick ability to expel a problem child.

We sent ours to give them a unique opportunity and, yes, to escape all the nonsense (magic spelling, common core arithmetic, silly everyone gets a trophy philosophy, the drumbeat of leftist ideology) and troubles (gangs, drugs) in the public schools. There were no day school options within a reasonable commute. Both our children loved the school, enjoyed the small classes and individual attention from teachers, and are functioning, independent adults.

I'm not saying there are not great kids graduating from public schools but boarding is also a wonderful option.

By far, the best money we ever spent. (P.S. There are also tremendous scholarships available and many international students so all of these schools have a relatively diverse population.)

I think you can get a solid education at any HS in Northern VA. I'm a TC Williams (Alexandria City) grad and while that school doesn't have a great rep, it was a better and more rigorous experience than my old school in Hampton Roads.

Now would I suggest TC if you can get into Washington-Lee (Arlington) or Lake Braddock (Fairfax Co)? Absolutely not. But a student who takes their education seriously would have to try hard not to get a good education at any NoVA HS.
