I am looking for buy my first home and need some good realtor recommendations. I am looking for a realtor with expertise throughout the DMV, not just NoVA. I also need someone who is good at handholding first-time and skittish prospective buyers.

I would narrow down the area you want to live in a little more than the entire DMV before picking a realtor. A realtor might be very familiar with the market of say townhouses in Fairfax County, but know nothing of row homes in DC. You'll also need someone actually licensed where you are looking. Try to have some idea of what you are looking for beyond "something" when you contact realtors.

I have a few colleagues that are good at holding your hand and licensed in all three areas.

Would you prefer a male or female agent?

Also, no agent licensed in 3 states will be an expert in the area. They will be able to facilitate and hold your hand through a transaction.

I think you need to do some research and read up on things that pertain: interest rates, tax rates in diff. areas, etc.

I can't imagine having the idea that some realtor can decide which area in the whole DMV would be a good fit.

I'm researching realtors in Western Loudoun -- any suggestions?

The previous agent we used, unfornately, passed away a couple years ago.

If they did, it would be a long process.

The search will be restricted to income or price range first.
Then move to commute time to work.
Schools for children.
Amenities used on the weekend.

It's a quick process if you're working with a budget.

The first step in considering buying is the financial aspect. Please don't confuse a realtor with a financial planner, mortgage broker, etc.

Get educated in this area first. LOADS of resources on the internet, books and local home buying seminars.

Given the traffic in this area, you will want to buy a home that provides the least painful commute. Yes, people don't stay in the same job so you will want to pick somewhere that offers some flexibility and provides for future job opportunities.

Plan on being there for 7 years at a minimum if you're conservative. Personally, I think anything less is a gamble.

Thanks! I've got a couple interviews lined up. If those don't work, I'll give her a call.
