Good morning everyone - I will be relocating to northern Virginia this fall and trying to get an idea of what commute I'm going to be looking at from the Sterling area. Details: will be leaving for work about 6:30 am and planned on taking the toll road. I know I will need to get off on 495 because I won't have another passenger. Using google maps with traffic it looks like at that time of day taking the toll road from Sterling is about 45 min to 1 hr to the Shirlington area of Arlington. Does this seem pretty accurate? Obviously this doesn't account for any accidents or anything else. Are there any other tips? I've looked into metro/bus but it's twice the cost of the toll fee and still seems to average about an hour (there's a bus stop right by my potential office). Thanks in advance for your help.

Where in Sterling are you coming from? Google Maps picks "Sterling" as a place directly off Rt 28, which is very convenient for commuting. When I lived in Sterling, it took 15-20 minutes, depending on lights to get to the Toll Road. Hopefully you have an exact address you are working with.

You won't have issues on 28, the Toll Road, or 495 at that time, but 395N will be all backed up.

We have a few places that we're looking at, most are closer to 7, east of 28.

Going to take you a while to get to the Toll Road. Why are you targeting Sterling, if your job is in Shirlington? Have you looked in Annandale or Springfield?

I live in Sterling, close to 7/28 interchange, leave at 6:30 am and am usually hitting the toll road in less than 10 mins. The work they have done on 28 this past year has made the traffic flow better. Then another 10 mins to my Tysons exit. Usually pretty consistent traffic.
