My family lives in Spotsylvania County. I've lived here my entire life and my husband moved here from a small place called Watertown, NY. I've recently started commuting to Alexandria for work and know that I will be with this particular company for the long haul. At first the commute was okay, but it seems to be getting harder and harder with my husband often working until 9 (yucky car salesman) and me having to do the 2 hour drive to Fredericksburg, another 1 hour to the sitters and home, and find time to make dinner, do some laundry, give the baby a bath, make lunches, etc. We are looking to move but my husband works in Fredericksburg. We're looking for something in the middle of Spotsy and Alexandria, and have been doing some research on Woodbridge. I too, have heard horrific stories. I've heard nothing but positive things about Lake Ridge though. We're just looking to rent for now, until we get to know the area and feel more comfortable in knowing where to buy. Is Lake Ridge a family friendly area? How long would the commute be to Alexandria, and how long south to Fredericksburg? Our there any other areas we should consider?

^ IMO, lake ridge is considered family oriented and family friendly.
It really depends at what time you leave for work but non-rush hour would take roughly 30 minutes to get to Beauregard St. assuming your going at a consistent speed of 70. Rush hour really depends on how you go about getting there.
I'd say 30-35 minutes to Fredericksburg with little traffic. Rush hour is really, really, really, bad though do to new developments in Stafford and Fredericksburg.
You should also check out some of the newer Lorton homes.

nize2beme,
My husband and I are considering purchasing in the Port Potomac estate area. Since it appears you have now been living there a few months, are you satisfied with the area and your home itself? Do you find the neighborhood to be safe and the residents friendly? We both work in DC and would also appreciate any suggestions you have about commuting, especially the VRE. If anyone else has any feedback on the Port Potomac subdivision we would appreciate your reply.

I too am interested in a house in the Newport subdivision. I don't know much about the Woodbridge area as a whole, but I don't want to move into an area that will be less than desirable! Please let me know what you mean by "interesting". I was hoping that since this home is nestled between an elementary school and a state park, that it would be a good place to live.

Newport is a nice area with very few police calls for service. An older neighborhood, at least some of it is, but overall a nice place. If living in Woodbridge is necessary then I wouldn't hesitate to live there. Leesylvania park is a nice park.

The area I was referencing was Georgetown Village, it's not the best area around to put in nicely.
