It didn't sound like the poster was implying that they are only a Virginia issue. But it is one of the things about this part of the country that sucks. Can be very buggy in the summer

Spend the bucks and have your yard treated and then at least you will be OK there! I had mine treated every 6 weeks from early June though end of September.

Thats your opinion on my opinion. Sounded to me like it was a Virginia issue and thus a ridiculous statement. I'm from semi arid/arid California and have lived in Alaska, there is NO part of the country that is immune to mosquitos.....
The OP mentioned mosquitos, not other "bugs".

Picaridin does work better than other DEET alternatives like Eucalyptus. Unfortunately it only lasts (on me) for about a half hour or so.

We summered in Maine last year and didn’t feel a single one. Went to Denver this summer and not a bite despite every day spent outside.

But of course, mosquitos aren’t only a VA thing. My recent trip to Texas reminded me of that.

I must be living right somehow. I rarely ever even see a Mosquito. And living out in the country now you'd think I'd see even more than when in Manassas. Must be that I'm living right or not very sweet.

I'm originally from LA county, and San Diego county. The mosquito situation is much worse in Virginia.

Yeah well mosquitoes are bad here, as well as other "bugs". Definitely worse than out west in the drier climates. But they have their own issues like everything being on fire. Still not sure what anyone said that you're taking issue with.

I've lived all over the country from west to east coast, and bar none the mosquitos in Northern Virginia are a head above other places. I'm not sure why, but I would guess it has a lot to do with mild Winters coupled with humid Summers. To add to this, I've never lived somewhere where they are seemingly active all day long and not just at dusk. It really is one thing I hate about this area.
