Eastern Market in DC has a few artists with very reasonable prices.

Ditto to 17thAndK's response. Alexandria's King Street arts festival and Sugarloaf at Dulles Exp Center. Sugarloaf in Gaithersburg is interesting too, but I usually don't want to make that drive from Fairfax.

Sugarloaf is crafts, not modern art.

Crafts in this case is inclusive of all sorts of art. It's not just Pioneer Woman types of stuff. The furniture makers make more than just butter churns as well.

I am very familiar with Sugarloaf Festival and certainly know it is more than butter churners and Pioneer Woman art. But it is NOT what I would suggest to someone who is specifically looking for modern art.

Just like I would not suggest a Brazilian steakhouse for a vegetarian. Sure, I'm sure they could find something there that might meet their tastes; but not a lot.

What you have there is a lot of artists working in a variety of styles and media. All of them will have completed works with them. Most will be happy to work with you in creating custom works reflecting your tastes and interests. Having a work done on commission is different from the usual find-and-buy experience. But it may not be for everyone.

I've actually commissioned a handful of pieces. What I would never do, is ask someone who is showing watercolors to paint me something in oil. What they bring is representative of their style and likely preferred media. I would never ask them to do something else. Not because they wouldn't do it; but because I likely won't like it.

A word to the wise on commissioning artwork - be prepared that the piece will not be EXACTLY what you envision in your head. Pick an artist with a style you like, discuss what you want, and be prepared for their own artistic view to come to the forefront.
