I'm moving to Alexandria, and I'll be living near the intersection of Rose Hill Drive and Telegraph Road in 22310. I'll be working at Bolling AFB.

For that commute, do you think it would be better to drive or ride the metro? If time of day is a deciding factor, I'm aiming to be at Bolling at 7am each day. I won't be carpooling at first, but possibly later on.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'd give the drive a shot. The WW bridge going into MD during morning usually isnt a bad ride. You could probably leave at 6 or 6:15 and get there in time. Metro would probably longer than that.

Anyone else wanna weigh in? How's the traffic on that portion of Telegraph Road? Does it move pretty smoothly?

I agree with Alanboy395's assessment. Driving to Bolling is probably the best option, given your location. If you leave around 6 or 6:15 am, you will usually be a little ahead of the herd. 6:30 am seems to be the magic start time around here for commutes.

From the Metro map, it doesn't look like there is a Metro stop close enough to Bolling to make it a convenient option. There might be a bus from the Pentagon to Bolling (it may even be free for defense employees).

There's a metro stop at Anacostia that offers a shuttle to Bolling. Does that make Metro better than driving?

That's going to be about an hour or more on the train (plus being dependent on the promptness of the shuttle) vs. 20-30 minutes by car.

You will probably get a transit subsidy (worth $1,200 or so per year) and save a lot of fuel and wear on your car if you take the train, but the grind of the extra commute time can wear you down. I once lived in SW DC and worked in Old Town Alexandria for a few months (kind of a reverse commute for you). I took the train a few times, but driving was just too convenient.
