Amazon has purchased 3 parcels south of the proposed Dulles site for a new data center campus. (Not inferring this has any bearing on the site selection)

Google also bought 158 acres for a new data center campus in Loudoun

Google Buys Land Outside Virginia's Core Data Center Cluster

I've seen news that they're hiring away Amazon employees in marketplace and cloud services.

About 280 acres had also been purchased by data center REITs recently.

Loudoun also recently changed their zoning to allow data centers in high density mixed use developments.

Article predicting Dulles is likely going to be selected as the site. It incorporates old information from a January article in the Wash Bus Journal where they expect that the proposed site will likely be enlarged to include an adjacent mixed-use projecct called The Hub (formerly DWC).

Apple is now looking to build a campus in NoVa, and some of the same sites are being proposed.

Quote:
The sites proposed by Northam's staff for Apple include office buildings and development sites in Crystal City, privately owned Loudoun County land near the Center for Innovative Technology and the Scotts Run development in Tysons.

Two of those locations, Crystal City and the Loudoun land, are part of sites Northam also pitched to Amazon. Both companies plan to make a decision this year.

There is a giant DoD cloud services contract for which the tech giants are competing. Microsoft and Google are other mentioned competitors.

There is some speculation that Amazon may turn this into multiple round competition in order to squeeze the finalists.

1. I am sure this will take longer than it should to favor Amazon in negotiations with local governments. As a matter of fact I believe they are fairly certain where they wish to go but this highly publicized search is to make sure that the site they choose can actually handle it.

2. If Amazon goes somewhere other tech companies may open larger offices in the area. In Redmond Google opened building right across from the Microsoft campus IIRC.

I think the trend is toward building regional hubs to speed up response times since more business will be direct-to-customer and residing in the cloud with its redundancies.
