Got it. But many of the suggestions made do not have a minimum.

The zoo in DC has indoor birthday parties, and the History Mseum might also have them.

If you are only having 5-6 kids, you don't actually have to do a "party" at the venue. You can just bring your son and friends there like you would normally do with your family. This works if you don't have the minimum number of kids required for a birthday party. We've done several parties that way. I no longer live in Northern Virginia, but we've done bowling, laser tag (Falls Church), Michael's Crafts, Cub Run indoor pool, Chuck E Cheese, rented the Vienna Community Center, and had home parties.

If you have a minivan, or a spouse and two cars, then I just have everyone drop their kids at my house and then we have pizza at our home. Then we drive the kids over to the bowling alley/video game place/laser tag place, etc. We do the activity and when it's over we drive them back to our house for cake/ice cream and playtime. And parents pick up from home. I always keep our parties to under $200.

Feels like the OP is asking us for permission to make a decision she's afraid to make on her own.

When I was growing up, we were taught to lower our expectations if you didn't have enough money.
