New job in Chantilly
Hello! We are considering taking a new job in the Chantilly area. I don't know a lot about the area and wanted to see if I could get some help finding a small town that is within an hours commute from Chantilly. We have two kids, 13 and 5, so schools will be a factor. Don't mind driving a little bit for affordable housing (max is 300k).
Front Royal looks like it fits the bill, but unsure of the commute time and I am worried about the superfund status.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Really? It's only 15 miles! I guess I just have to do some driving around when I get there. I'm trying to nail down commute times and I pegged Haymarket to Chantilly at no more than 20 or 25 minutes.

Yes youy will definitely have to do some driving around, traffic in the DC area is absolutely horrendous (2nd worst in the nation WAHOOOOO!). There are several roadways in this region where traveling a mere five miles miles can take upwards of forty-five minutes to an hour so you will REALLY need to consider that before you choose to live far from work.

If schools are a factor, I would stay away from Front Royal.

And to the OP....a commute from Front Royal to Chantilly will be AWFUL but given your 300K max budget you will probably have to look there unless you are OK with buying a townhouse closer in. I don't know what the exact commute time is from Front Royal to Chantilly, but I-66 is one of the most gridlocked routes in the region. If you have conventional work hours I can't imagine that it could be done in under 90 minutes each way.

If you are willing to consider Front Royal in Warren County, take a look at Clarke County. Berryville and Boyce have homes in your price range and Clarke County schools have a better reputation.
