Need 22150 Info (Near Accotink Lake Park)
My husband accepted a DoD contract job at the Navy Yard, and we have been looking at rentals with a reasonable commute time, decent school systems, near essentials (grocery stores, etc.), that sort of thing. We have been looking at a place in the 22150 zip code, Atteentee Rd. specifically. Just wondering how the area is in terms of crime, traffic, schools, and overall. We have three kids (4, 2, and 1), and are probably in for the long term, as the 4 yr. old will be starting school in the '09-'10 yr., and the 2 yr. old in the '10-'11 yr. Any info would be HIGHLY appreciated, as this is one of the most promising leads we have had yet. Thanks!

That's an OK area....lots of low income folks up on Backlick Rd, though.
Take a look at the Ravensworth Farm area (zip 22151)...it's on the other side of the lake (with multiple park access points). The same builder (Oliver Carr) built the houses, so they are identical, but a little newer in Ravensworth.

Atteentee homes were built by Crestwood, not Carr (Hanover was built by Carr). The two areas are very similar. It might be a bit easier to get out from 22150; Braddock is Hell. The other downsides of 22151 would be that ugly sound barrier along Leesville Blvd, and too many speeding people in too much of a hurry. There are a few more McMansions in 22151, probably due to the abundance of the smaller ramblers there. Crestwood Elementary used to be tops, still probably pretty good (the school scene is probably better in 22152).
Hell, if it's a good price you should take it. You might really like it, and you might be saving big bucks over Vienna or West Springfield.

there's a VRE station close to that area at 6900 Hechinger Drive Springfield, Virginia 22151. Free parking at the station, and it would be simple for your hubby to get into DC

Yeah Okay, thanks for the primer...but don't forget Regor, builders of fine homes in this area i the late 50's, early 60's.
To the OP, I think you'll like the 22151 side of the lake much better. Compare Ravensworth Elementary's scores to that of Lynbrook's.
As far as more more "speeding people" in 22151....that's laughable! Hell, NOBODY around here can drive!

I think that side of Hanover would go to Crestwood.

That is a lovely neighborhood in terms of the houses and environment but you might think twice about the schools. It's probably Crestwood but might be Lynbrook. Here are the details:
Crestwood: 54% of students have limited English proficiency;58% receive free or reduced-price meals.
FCPS - School Profiles - Crestwood ES - Demographics
Lynbrook: 56% of students have limited English proficiency; 66% receive free or reduced price meals.

The area is not that bad in the Lynbrook and Crestwood schools areas. It all depends on what you're looking for. Lynbrook is not a bad school. However, I like Lynbrook better than Crestwood. Lynbrook services parts of 22151 and 22150. Crestwood does only 22150. There are a lot of people from spanish countries in the area. However, most of the people here are nice. Do your own research and don't let all the negative talk change your mind from the area that you want to be in. Also Garfield Elementary is close by as well. That area is pretty nice too.

About .5% are from Spain; most are from Central America. Kind of like the difference between Great Falls and Roanoke.
