Hello,

I'm a single mom, originally from Gujarat, India, looking to move closer to the DC area where my children live. I would like to move to an affordable town within 1 or 2 hours of driving distance to Washington, DC. Ideally, I'm looking for a one or two bedroom apartment for 600-700 dollars per month.

Do you have any suggestions for affordable towns within 2 hours driving distance of the DC area? I would also like to live somewhere with an Indian community.

Thank you for your help!

600-700 won't get you a one bedroom. At that price, you are looking at renting a room in someone's house.

I realize my budget is on the lower end, so I’m also considering places around 2.5 hours away, around the Richmond area. Would I be able to find something in my budget there?

Richmond has gotten pretty pricey also. I'm not sure there will be any place in the 2 hour driving distance that will be in that price range.

Rentals in that price range exist in Richmond's Northside (as well as the Tri-Cities area of Petersburg/Colonial Heights/Hopewell, but those would add 20-30 minutes to a drive to the DC area).

However, the primary Indian community areas in the Richmond metro are Western Henrico (where rentals run about double the OP's range) and Chester (rentals run about 1.5 times OP's range, and it's 15+ minutes farther away from DC).

I second this. Some Desis in NOVA offer their basement for rent. You may try a local facebook group for desis (For e.g. Ashburn Desis, Herndon Desis etc.) and post a message. You will get some good responses.
