Ashburn 267 (Toll road) to the Pentagon
My family and I are relocating and I will be commuting to the pentagon. We are interested in homes in Ashburn area, however I am concerned about the commute; ways to get to DC, travel time, etc…any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

That commute will be an absolute nightmare. Driving alone, it usually takes around 80-90 minutes (even longer in bad weather) during peak rush to get from Ashburn to downtown DC, and with the Pentagon being similar mileage I can't imagine the drive time being any less. There are a variety of ways to go but I drive the opposite direction from my home in Arlington to work in Tysons Corner, I will leave the best travel methods to people who work in that immediate area.

theres about 8 threads on the toll road. The one thing you should do is get yourself an e-zpass transponder tag. The toll lanes down here are cool because you can drive 30 MPH thru them with the pass. If you're going from the beltway 495 -> to 28 everyday it will cost you $2.50 daily in tolls. https://www.ezpassva.com/CreateAccou...countHome.aspx
Best thing you could do for your family now is rent a place down in Springfield, and get to know the area a little bit better before you jump into a mortgage. The poster above was right, the traffic down here is a nightmare.

I agree with the other posters. I really wanted to live in Ashburn when we first moved here because so many families recommended it. We stayed in temporary quarters near Sterling for about 4 months (an area slightly closer to DC than Ashburn). It took my husband about 1 hour in the morning to get to work in DC and 1.5 hours in the evening to get home, despite the fact that he left for work after 8:30 am and returned after 6:00 pm. The other concern was that you really have no metro station or VRE accessibility from that area so you do have to drive. We decided it wasn't the right place for our family's priorities. Definitely try out the commute during the school year (summers are not good indicators of regular traffic) before committing to a place. GL!

If working at the Pentagon you should consider looking into the West Springfield and Burke areas of Fairfax County. These communities have everything that exists out in Ashburn (although not brand new), good schools, and the commute will be MUCH shorter. The home prices are higher in Fairfax County, however given the current real estate situation you should be able to find some deals. Just a thought....
