Is it true that when you seek government assistance in Virginia you have to eventually pay it back? (Welfare, foodstamps etc )

I have a family member who moved to Virginia and got assistance for his daughter and they ended up taking 900 from his tax return for child support because supposedly in Virginia you have to pay back the government assistance you received once you are on your feet.

Now this makes no sense to me correct me if I’m wrong.

Why do you have to pay something back when the reason you got the help was because you were in a tough situation to begin with.

Not really familiar with the states laws but It sounds very bogus.

Please help

Interesting that you used the term "child support", which to me doesn't have anything to do with government assistance. It sounds like this child lives with him, so does he pay child support for another child? Is it possible that he owed back child support?

Back child support payments can be taken out of tax refunds.

Something is fishy!!! Nope just one child and the child was living with the grandmother (his mom) until he was able to get on his feet so they both shared custody of him but the dad was living in nyc after a while and the grandmother kept the child in Virginia so to me it sounds like the grandmother put her own son on child support!! The mother of the child is completely out of the picture . I’m just trying to do my detective work

If the grandmother was the custodial guardian, it's very possible that the father had to pay child support and was behind in payments.

Any particular reason for the detective work?

About 15yrs ago I had custody of my grandchildren. I put their mother on child support. Yup, they took all the payback from her tax returns. You have kids, pay for them.

Ok, it sounds like HE didn't receive assistance; but his daughter received assistance.

And it sounds like the daughter was receiving assistance under the legal custody of the grandmother.

Not sure the grandmother requested child support from the son; it is more likely the STATE requested that the child support be paid. You can't not pay child support, expect the state to pay, and then whine about not getting a tax refund.
