There are so many interesting, historic and scenic places to visit nearby to get away from the terrible DC area. It's a good base to travel to better places to live and visit.

This thread is alive!! Thanks for reviving it.

I've not experienced in all the area has to offer. But so far, I really enjoy what I've seen in the area itself.

It can't be said enough times that there are so many fun free things to do in DC that the price of taking the Metro is nothing compared to it.

I've lived in Northern Virginia for thirty years. It has much to recommend it but the two major strikes against it are the high cost of living (housing in particular) and the traffic. If that doesn't bother you there are a ton of things to do, arts, culture, ethnicity galore and quite possibly it is the most educated part of the country. It's hard to find someone in a suburban neighborhood without a masters degree!

Having said this, thirty years is enough. As I move toward retirement, I don't want the downsides anymore so we are looking at cooler and less populous areas of the northeast instead.
