This two-part series gives a great overview of how NoVa snagged Amazon while offering incentives that seemed much less generous than some of the other states that were the front-runners. Very interesting play by play!

NOVA snagged Amazon because Washington DC is right here. Congress, Bezo's house, Washington Post, etc.

I'll give VA credit for beating out DC itself and MD by offering up the sacrifice of Crystal City, but the whole thing was a charade. DC area and NY were both in the lead right from the start. Let's not pretend Columbus or Philly ever stood a REAL chance.

Totally agree! It was all for a show. Bezo's very strategic and he purchased his house in DC for a reason. Naturally Amazon would follow him. VA is much more business friendly then DC and MD so it was an obvious choice. The articles were an interesting read but the fact is, VA sold itself. There is too much credit given to the person to indicate he made the deal happen. As Bezos said recently, ultimately he makes a decision based on his gut feeling. I just feel bad for other states/areas that so much time, money and resources have been lost to play along with Amazon's scheme.

Pretty much this. I thought it was fairly easy to figure out. I figured DC was too small to put Amazon there, plus, VA is better for businesses when it comes to taxes. Crystal City being right across the river from the government, WaPo, and right near a major airport makes it a clear reason why.

we shouldn't call this a HQ.. this is like a field office and they have another one in NY...
They have a decade to hire 25000 and 25000 could all be just temp contractors if they wanted...
Bezos bought a house and he knew exactly where his next field office will be years ago..
we just gave him free tax money and he didn't even say thanks...

How is DC too small for Amazon when DT DC has more office space than CC, Rosslyn and Tysons?

The HQ wasn't ever going to inner DC, or Navy Yard etc. Heck the NY HQ2 half didn't even go to Midtown Manhattan. I think that is what he/she is getting at.

Living in a State that didn't get it, I say let VA have it! Our State didn't offer the giveaways that many offered (though, to be honest, didn't have it to give away). My pity for you dealing with worse traffic and escalating housing costs. Don't feel too bad, though. You still did better than WI with Foxconn!

Sure, Virginia will gladly take all the jobs and real estate projects and supporting companies that come with the headquarters. I would rather have traffic and a tax base then, say, a low traffic abandoned town like the Midwest is chuck full of.

Yes who knows how NOVA residents will deal with bad traffic and out of control housing costs.
