I'm interested in finding out how people normally find who they need to do home repairs. Let me know if you call a friend to ask who they know, or if you pick up the Yellow Pages, or do you go online? Thanks.

I have an online subscription to Checkbook Magazine and use it frequently to search for local contractors in Northern VA. There is a section on the web site that is called neighbor-to-neighbor where other subscribers rate/comment on contractors that they have used. It has been a valuable resource for me to use as a homeowner!

I do all three, in conjunction with Angie's List, Checkbook magazine, and the County consumer website.

One thing about the Yellow Pages....the larger the ad a company has, the LESS likely I am to call them. Yellow Page ads are extremely expensive, so if a company has a two full page ad, I figure they're screwing people.

Fortunately, I'm a big DIY guy, so I can handle most things myself.

(I got so tired of being screwed by HVAC companies, I went to HVAC school and obtained the necessary licenses and now _I_ am my own (and friends') HVAC company! It's not brain surgery to repair an A/C unit or furnace!)
