You can use Ft. Belvoir or input the zip codes when choosing the state (VA). BTW, you might want to include 22152 (West Springfield) as well if you choose to look in the Burke area.

Unfortunately, it kind of hard to find family oriented places near a metro. Those places are usually packed with singles, childless couples.

Within a 6 block walking distance, I've found the East Falls Church, West Falls Church, Dunn Loring, and Vienna Metro to be the most family friendly. I also like Tacoma Park off the Red line in maryland/DC, but the local schools there are terrible if you want to be there long term. There are also some SFH and duplexes within walking distance of the Huntington Metro, but the schools there are mediocre and I find the neighborhood a little ugly.

The Clarendon, Virginia Square, and Ballston areas have family friendly SFH and townhouse communities 4 to 8 blocks away from those metro stations, but the area right around the metros are packed full of younger people and college kids.

Unfortunately, the places I mentioned are kind of expensive for what you get. The least expensive method is find a community with bus (hopefully an express bus) access to the metro. Your options will increase exponentially and the prices fall, but the commuting headaches increase.
