Old Town Alexandria is my favorite spot in the DC area. Great place to just walk around. ANd there is an art studio called the museum factory which is fun to visit.

Here is another activity idea.

Drive to Georgetown, and take a boat over to Alexandria.

Takes about 45 minutes.
You get to see some monuments on the way over.

Great at night.

Link to that is Washington Cruises, Washington Dinner Cruises | Spirit Cruises in Washington DC (http://www.spiritofwashington.com/dc/bridge.jsp - broken link) - I've heard it's great but haven't been on it.

Checking out shows at the Birchmere - Welcome to the Birchmere - would be a good idea too!
