I don't think it's a rip off if you've seen some of the cars on the road held together with duct tape! The inspection sticker is in the middle bottom of your windshield...if you forget when it's due, you've got to be blind!

Maybe that's why they require the eye test for getting your driver's license.

It's called an inspection and it's done annually. It's not just for emissions.

Correct. The safety inspection is annual; the emissions test is every two years. However, if you have a current valid emission certification from the state you are relocating from (i.e., within the past 12 months), you don't need to get another emissions test right now.

Just got my new license and registered the car. Didn't have to take any eye exam, just turned over the old license. Be prepared to come in with proof of residence, phone bill (not cell) or other utility bill or lease. Also proof of who you are. The best ID to have is a Passport.

If the car is title in another state, but the lien is still held by the bank etc, be prepared to fill out that form, available online. The web page can be misleading though, it implies that you must come in and complete that form, then file for VA registration. Not true, get the emissions, take the former state registration and the paperwork on the lien holder and they can complete all the paperwork right then. It only took about 20 minutes from start to finish. The longest wait was for the DL to be printed out. If you have title to the vehicle, they will transfer it to a VA title.

I think you have like 3-6 months after you move here to do all of your paperwork etc.
