I live in the exact same area up Yoakum. Violent crime is EXTREMELY rare, petty crime is pretty in control but smash-and-grab car break-ins are getting to be a small concern but as long as you dont leave anything tempting in your car its no problem for you to be worried about. The bus lines to metros are in short walking distance.
For colleges, George Mason is not TOO far away.
