Breaking Lease (Arlington County)
I have been living in a basement apt. for 7 months. Upon moving in, I noticed water coming in whenever it rains and I have to keep a pile of newspapers in the corner to soak it up (last weeks' monsoon filled two garbage bags). The owner has finally contacted a contractor who says they need to do a major repair that requires taking out walls, floors, installing pumps, and pouring concrete. I can't be in the room when this happens but I have no place to go and more importantly, no place to put all my belongings. The owner actually believes this will take a day, but I'm not an idiot. The thing is, I had a reason to break the lease when they weren't doing anything. Now, that they're willing to fix this, I'm telling them they can't because I have no place to go. I think it benefits both parties if they just let me move out, but I haven't found a new place yet. Should I even bring up breaking the lease before I find a new apt.? I've emailed the Arlington Dept. of Housing with no response. Who else should I contact? Any, any help is appreciated.
