I have lived in Nova for 9 years and would never classify people here as snobby. I actually think people here are very friendly. Unlike NY and LA, people in Nova have money but tend not to show off. People work hard and like to have fun but there isn't any attitude. That is why I love living here. I think it is one of the best places to live in the US in my opinion. Where else can you live where your knowledge about politics means more than what shoes you are wearing or what purse you are carrying. Education is valued and I think that is great.

I don't know because I haven't taken the time to get to know anyone however I have noticed that people will walk right into you and keep going. I have had to yell "EXCUSE YOU" quite a few times in the store.

Hey! I have been reading your posts. You and I are in the same boat in that we both have come from NJ (i'm originally from SC), have problems making friends, and both agree that the NOVA mentality is definitely not an east coast thing. We moved from central NJ and have to say I do miss it sometimes. I'm very laid back and not the typical "Jersey loudmouth". LOL. Hope you have made some friends. I still need some!! I am a SAHM with three kids, I joined a Mom's group but left because on the very first time I went, I was asked what I did for a living, and when I replied with "i'm a SAHM, one woman said, "well, they don't stay young forever" and she walked away, and nobody talked much to me after that. Welcome to NOVA!! I never went back. Thanks for your posts!

busymommy3 - you are going to be my new best friend!!

I did find a Mom group I liked when I lived in Stafford - they were down-to-earth but as soon as I moved up to Fairfax County - all I heard was - "I went to ______ college, I have a degree in _______, I make _____a year, my house has _____ square feet, I drive a _____....blah, blah, blah

At least in Jersey - they had the big hair, big gold, gaudy McMansion, Escalade and just shut up about it.

I did PM you, so we'll set something up. Just for the record for all who read this, I do believe there are "snobby" people everywhere!! I was born and bred in SC, and have lived in GA, NY, Virginia Beach, NJ and now here in NOVA, and you will find all types no matter where your at. I do like the area where I live though, its nice!

You can find elitists and snobs everywhere if you look diligently enough though. We even have them here in Scranton, PA. I think most have already touched upon the points that I would address in regards to the perceived "culture" of NoVA.

Many of you spend too much time commuting. Most of you moved to Loudoun County, Fairfax County, etc. because you wanted the best quality-of-life you could possibly find for your families (and who could blame you), but many of you did not realize just how heavy the traffic congestion would be en route to work. Being behind the wheel for an hour each way to work in congestion can really lead to some short-fused people. In addition to this there are a lot of well-educated and high-earning people in NoVA. Accordingly there are a lot of higher-end vehicles and McMansions to be found. Many see this conspicuous consumption and assume "snob," but I'm friends with many upper-middle-class people here in Scranton who drive Benzes and Audis and live in master-planned communities, and they are some of the friendliest people you could ever have the privilege of meeting.

The transience is another factor. Why reach out to befriend a new neighbor if that new neighbor might relocate again in just a year? NoVA seems to be a revolving door from what I can tell. It would be a huge risk for someone to invest what little spare time they have when they're not commuting or not putting in long hours at the office to afford to support themselves and their families into forming a fledgling new friendship with someone who may just be a distant memory in a few years.

I think one solution to this would be to tell the NIMBYs to "put a cork in it" and promote MASSIVE mass transit improvements throughout NoVA, DC, MD, and the WV panhandle in order to make commutes less stressful. The less abrasive people get from being screwed over on the freeways the more likely they'll be to give you a chance to enter into their lives.

Hey SCRANBARRE, Aren't you the same person who posts on the NEPA forum? From what I can tell from your NEPA posts, I get the impression you may be thinking of moving from NEPA. I think you would love living in NOVA or Washington DC. I came here from NEPA when I was 24 and I will never move back. After twenty some years, I still love it here. Yes it can be transient, but I've had the good fortune of making wonderful lifetime friends who are also here to stay. I can't think of anyone in my neighborhood who is planning on moving. I bet you could get a great job in urban planning or something like that since you seem to have an interest and knowledge in that area. Give it a try!

Funny VRE - you are just jealous that you dont have big hair!

Yes, I do agree that the commute might be making people cranky - and I have tried to talk to the Volvo/McMansion crowd and they are stuck up - they just dont "appear" stuck up - they are! come on - a little girl in my sons kindergartan class has a blackberry! I thought he was imagining it - but its true! What does a little girl need a blackberry for? I am sure some of you think it is perfectly normal for her to have one. So sad!

There are also what I call "education snobs" around here - jeez- just because I dont have a PhD it does not mean I am stupid - just a little dim but - hey - he he
