Yes, I do agree that the commute might be making people cranky - and I have tried to talk to the Volvo/McMansion crowd and they are stuck up - they just dont "appear" stuck up - they are! come on - a little girl in my sons kindergartan class has a blackberry! I thought he was imagining it - but its true! What does a little girl need a blackberry for? I am sure some of you think it is perfectly normal for her to have one. So sad!

There are also what I call "education snobs" around here - jeez- just because I dont have a PhD it does not mean I am stupid - just a little dim but - hey - he he
Don't put yourself down.

I just recently moved from the Detroit, Michigan area and have found the majority of NOVA people to be kind, considerate, and very helpful. I have found that it seems to matter how you approach people that determines how they react. My wife and I enjoy the area and have pretty much gotten over the "sticker shock" for housing.

I lived in NoVA for 12 years and found it so easy to make friends there. I loved the diversity of cultures, I felt that everyone was pretty normal. No snobbery that I was aware of.

I moved to Charlotte, and I was so looking forward to "southern hospitality". HERE is where I have found the snobs. My neighborhood is full of them. We don't have 2.2 kids, so I can't seem to make friends with the mothers. I don't do "Bible study" so that's out. I just don't find people to meet and I don't particularly like the ones I do meet all that much. They're all transplants, but here in the south I feel that there's much more intolerance for a way of life that isn't "traditional" (including the choice to simply not have kids).

I would love to live among the people of NoVA again, but with the climate, traffic and prices of CLT.

I've heard some of what you are saying Diertac - relatives have moved to NC and say that there really is a large amount of intolerence about "Northerners" - even if the people that moved there weren't "Northerners" technically.

I don't find snobby here, as I've stated many times, but it can be hard to meet people - we don't have children by choice either and it seems most people are child-oriented or career-oriented.

We (husband and I) are from PA originally (different areas) - people are very friendly to me but I guess it's a different mindset? We would just like to meet folks that like to hang out, maybe see some local interesting events, play some board or card games, have some beers, barbeque, talk, etc.

Welcome to NOVA! My dh and I lived on the U.P. for a year and that was a real change for us. We enjoyed it though. I agree with what you are saying about your approach.. can make all of the difference in the world...
