This might be helpful; you enter the address and date range and it shows you what was reported and the status of the case. A lot of cases seem to be unsolved.

You can also sign up (at the city's website) for daily crime report updates.

LOL! I had not heard of a Saf-T-Man until your post so I googled it, (love the google machine), and how funny I can see why walking or rather dragging him around wouldn't fool anyone!

I live in the apartments there by Braddock Metro. My sister lives there as well. There is some limited crime. The projects are annoying and contain some real _____ kids, but overall, I've never had a problem. I've certainly never been a victim or known anyone who has been a victim.

One thing to remember is the projects are surrounded by wealthy neighborhoods. It's not as if the wealthy neighborhoods are an exception. They're the rule. In fact, these people sitting around in those projects are damb lucky to live there partially on the city's dime. I have to pay a fortune every month to live in the same area.

I hope none of you chose to live there. There have been three murders since last year. The police cars and on-foot are continuously racing down the alleys between Wythe and Pendleton. Colecroft has kids regularly smoking pot in the Plaza (it is not secured) and a woman had her window broken by a gunshot. The 7-11 down the street has lots of hooligans. All of the promised development has been put on hold or canceled (warehouses, Monarch, etc.).

It's been over a year -- they have probably moved twice by now.

The condos there seem nice. The public housing is within a block, and many kids hang out playing in the streets until late. What crime there is in the city often is in this area - the worst of it is usually between people who know each other or a drug transaction, but a cab driver was murdered not far away, and there are hold-ups.

There is a nearby 7-11 that gets its fair share of drunks doing their beer runs and I have often been asked for money as I pass people walking under the rail overpass. There is often a sheriff's car or Alexandria police at the 7-11.

The homes along West St are nice, and there have been home improvements in the nearby area right in the midst of the public housing blocks that make it seem like some gentrification is occurring.

Not only is there Metro rail going by, but also freight trains which can be heard and felt some distance away, so I can only imagine what it's like right next to it.

I walk this area often and have never had a problem, but I don't feel comfortable with my wife going through there after dark, due to the crime reports. Use that crime report site and do a search for Wythe St since Jan 2009. 55 crime reports, 41 arrests. Same time frame for 400 to 550 E Braddock shows 30 reported incidents. Most of this is petty crime. Not so petty if you're the victim, however. I could think of less risky places to live in Alexandria, but still, it's not a definite 'not recommended.'

Welcome, Colecroft, and thanks for the update. These concerns were the primary reason we decided not to put in an offer on a house we liked near there last year and it sounds as if that was the right decision.
