So for a historical feel and some independant bookstores and coffeeshops with a lot of old trees around and a nearby river, am I looking mostly at Leesburg/Purcellville area? Any other places to check out where I could rent for about $1000 and be kinda close to Reston/Ashburn/Fairfax?
Thank you all so much for helping me do my preliminary research from afar (Sahurita, AZ).
Husband is flying out tomorrow for interview- I feel so much better knowing there are indeed places we would love to live in that we can actually afford! I owe it all to you folks and your enormous Nova-influenced brains overcoming any propensity towards rudeness ;-)
Seriously, I have been all over this board recently and no doubt annoying the heck outta some people with queries, and I appreciate every word of input. Thanks!

If you are renting then I'd stick with Leesburg.
It's bigger than Purceville and will have more to offer. There are some nice condos right off of main street that are within walking distance to the shopes resturants, the courthouse (summer concerts) and even the old movie theater.

Plus it puts you a bit closer to Herndon (quick jump on 267) or don't pay the toll$$$ and take rt7 it'd be about 30 minutes. Ashburn is about 15 minutes.
Fairfax is a bit longer but not too bad.

Purceville is a bit quieter etc... but I don't know if it's has as many rentals as Leesburg.

The river (the Potomac) can be hiked to at Balls Bluff Battlefield...right off of rt 15 and Battlefiled pkwy ( acess from the Potomac crossing neighborhood)

Or..for a day on the river...take Whites ferry across (bike or dive)to the MD side of the Potomac and ther you can bike along the canal (all hte way into DC) or use the boat ramp at the ferry store etc....

For info check out both the local papers...

Good luck...feel free to PM me with any other questions
