I am going to be living at the Cavalier Apartments and I need to drive up to Great Falls. Route 7 on mapquest says the drive is 13miles. If I leave at 8am-830am in the morning from Falls Church Cavalier Apartments to Great Falls 13 miles on Route 7 (pretty much a straight shot) = how long of a commute???
Also, do I have a better chance taking 267, 50, 495 and a couple side streets which equals 18 mile commute??
If anybody could let me know which one would be faster, that would be wonderful. Thanks in advance for the answers and I am excited to move!

Which one?! How long if you know?
1. basically a straight shot 13 miles on route 7 (mapquest says longer time)
2. 267, 50, 495, side streets for 18 miles (mapquest says shorter time though)

Welcome to the area, and one of the worst traffic areas in the country. If you leave at 8am , it could take you an hour to drive 13 miles.

In the morning if I am driving away from the city it won't be that long will it? Falls Church to Great Falls 13 miles on Route 7 west is going away from the city at 8am. How long do you think that will be on average?
And how loing do you think Route 7east going from Great Falls to Falls Church would take around 430?

Wink What You Don't Know - Will Cause You to Be Late Around Here

Well, I am originally from NJ and typically there, if you were traveling away from NYC, it wasn't too bad. However, here - you need to go WAY west to have that happen (west of Reston). You are still traveling very congested and over-run areas. The traffic may break a bit once you leave Vienna, but I doubt it. There are thousands of drivers who commute every day from Maryland to NOVA, more specifically places such as Vienna, McLean, Falls Church, Reston, Herndon, Fairfax, etc. who are all on the road at that time and heading west. So, if it were me, I would wake up early and take some runs at it and get a feel for the traffic and the route. I would also ask people at your job/school where they live and see if someone has a similar commute. That way, you can share info about traffic patterns, etc. 4:30 pm - schools out - I would budget and 40 minutes each way - easily, to be on the safe side. Maybe you will be lucky and it won't be quite that bad.

Is this the Cavalier Apts on Wilson Blvd?
Here's another route:

Right on Roosevelt (turns into Sycamore)
Right on Williamsburg (at CVS/Calico Corners)
Left on Old Dominion
Left on Georgetown Pike
Right or left on Utterback

This route avoids Seven Corners and Tyson's Corner

OR
Right on Roosevelt/Sycamore
Left on Williamsburg
Right on Great Falls Street (turns into Lewinsville when it crosses 123 in McLean)
Right on Route 7

This route avoids Seven and Tyson's Corners, and you get on Route 7 further out, going against most commuter traffic

I would certainly endorse <claremarie>'s suggestions! Depending on where in GF you need to end up, one or the other of those two should be about ideal!
