Speeding on I-81 (Woodstock, Shenandoah County)
I was ticketed on the 17th of June 2008 for speeding (78/65) near mile marker 278 on I-81 (Woodstock Area). I was given the ticket with an option for pre paying $126. Is there a chance to get it reduced to below 74 miles (that would take 2 points off from the initial 4 points demerit) if I go to court? I have a clean record with 2 safe points also. I live in Blacksburg VA and was wondering whether it would be worthwhile to drive the 175 miles one way in the chance that I get a reduced penalty. Any inputs in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Totally not worth it. The insurance companies generally don't care about 4 points versus two points - they generally just count the number of tickets you have irrespective of speed unless it's 20+ over and/or DUI - and you're not in any danger of having your license restricted or otherwise impacted by this ticket. Just pay it and move on, and grumble every time you pass through Shenandoah County from now.

It is the oldest courthouse west of the Blue Ridge, but I would still just pay the ticket in advance. It was a lot worse, when I was a JMU student, and the speed limit was 55!

Been there, done that...just paid it and moved on. I loathe I-81 not only because of the truck traffic but the cops are EVERYWHERE. Was the cop that pulled you over by any chance hiding in an access road in a hilly part of the median? It seems like they always do that on 81 which results in you never seeing them until you come within about 50 feet of the patrol car.

Getting it reduced to below 74 mph would only save one point.
speeding demerit points:
1-9 mph over= 3 points
10-19 mph over= 4 points
20 or more over= 6 points
Given the chance of getting it reduced (slim & none), and the fact that you have 2 good points, leaving you with 2 demerits....I'd pay it and forget about it.
The worst part will be the effect on your insurance premium, but I don't think the underwriters see much further than the word...speeding.

Thats exactly where he was. And it was a gradient and there was a truck in front of me on the right lane and I accelerated to pass it on the left lane and he was right in front. I know everyone says this but I usually dont go above 75 and would not have if not to pass this truck....
Anyway I am doing the prepay today and hoping that the insurance company doesnt jack up my premium way too much because of this.
thanks for all your inputs

I'm actually a little suprised that you were pulled over and ticketed for 78/65. I didn't think they started ticketing until 80+ in a 65...

Actually, 80+ is a Reckless Driving charge in Va. as I found out over the weekend.

I thought 20 MPH over the posted limit was reckless.

I believe it's both...
20 over or +80mph automatically gets you a reckless tickets verses a speeding ticket.
