Default Moving to Springfield near Burke

Hi, I appreciate all of the feedback I received to a previous question - thanks.

We are close to signing a lease for a townhouse in Springfield near the Somerset at South Run development. It is near Burke. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback/comments about the area, school (Sangster Elem), and things to do/places to go with a 5 year old? We will be completely new to the area.... so any "hidden gems" we should check out would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

East of where you are going is pretty depressing. Walk around the Springfield Mall and the Strip Center next to the Kmart and look at the people. Watch your wallet. West of Rolling towards Burke is nicer.

Welcome! Your child is a perfect age for:

Burke Lake Park, Fairfax County Park Authority

Hidden Pond Nature Center

Lake Accotink Park, Fairfax County Park Authority

South Run RECenter, Fairfax County Park Authority

Be sure to pick up a copy of the "Parktakes" catalog from one of those locations for activities and classes.

If you haven't seen it yet, here's the website for Sangster:

Take a train ride, ride the carousel, and go mini-golfing at Burke Lake Park.

Welcome to the area.

You are moving to a very safe and suburban location. Driving along Huntsman Blvd. with its small hills and walking path will make you feel miles from DC, while being close enough. If you like Mexican food, a great place called Austin Grill is on Old Keene Mill Road, five minutes from the intersection of Huntsman and Old Keene Mill. Whole Foods Market is there as well.

Burke Lake Park and South Run Recreation Center (pool, fitness centre and classes, etc) are right around the corner from you as well.

Check out the playground at the end of Dorothy Lane off of Huntsman. Also, be sure to go to Pohick Library. They have same great kids classes there. Welcome to the area!

Default El Paso

Go to the El Paso Mexican Restaurant near the Springfield Mall. It has delicious Mexican food. Also, Springfield is pretty safe. People here tend to make seem more dangerous than it really is.

The area of Springfield near Burke is beautiful and safe - the bad part of Springfield is near the Springfield Mall which is an old cruddy mall. Anything near Rolling Rd./Old Keene Mill is very nice - family neighborhoods

On Sunday morning you can make it to Maine Ave. in DC in less than 30 minutes. Superb fish market. Also, Trader Joe's is in that kind of crappy area, near K-mart. I would say it is still safer than most of Arlington and/or Alexandria. Springfield Baptist Church has a free program called Royal Ambassadors. They have a small gym. I'm not sure if it starts for 1st graders of third, though.

Watch your speed, when driving. The FCPD is aggressive on traffic enforcement.
