Default Pound, Virginia (I want to talk about my childhood experiences visiting there.

Does anyone live in Pound who might have lived during the 50's or 60's and know a woman who ran a store about three miles from Pound named Mae Glass Willis. She had a boyfriend named Fletcher. There was also a relative who owned a store in Pound who had throat cancer and had a hole in his throat so that he could talk. It has been many years since I was there (I am originally from WV, but I now live in California.) My sister knew Scottie Dotson (whose name is on the memorial under Vietnam War). The atmosphere of my grandmother's store is so strong in my memory ... was a store front ... she lived in the residence connected to the front. There would be pop bottle caps in front, blackberries -huge!- all around her house, a three room school house converted into a house ... a creek that swelled into a raging river when it rained .... Can anyone help me out?

Thanks.

Christine

Hi Christine. Pound is about 300 miles from Northern Virginia.

Post your question in the Roanoke forum.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

Christine,

My mother was born and raised in Pound, VA. She remembers the store. Her sister used to live down the road to the right. She now lives in KY but a number of her siblings (she had eight) still live there. And of course, she still makes frequent visits there. Her maiden name was Balthis and we are related to all the Vanovers in Pound.

I grew up in Pound but I haven't lived there since I enlisted in the USAF in 1960. I do go back there every few years and the last time I was there they had a road called Vanover Road on the Right hand fork of Bold Camp. You can go to msn.com and click on "White Pages" to get the phone numbers of the Vanovers on Vanover Road. I suggest you contact one of them to get a lead on the people who have lived there longest an are familiar with the people of days gone by.

Ed Balthis lived up on Vanover Road, or Vanover Town, as it was called back in the 50s.

Hi Christine,

My mom is from Pound - born and raised! We love it there and I am actually considering moving there in the next couple of years. My mom is Lenna Short Tetterton, born in 1950. Her mother was Dorcie Short Mullins and most of the family still live in Pound today. I am sure she would remember exactly who your grandmother is, the store, the schoolhouse, everything! I have often heard the same type of memories from her. If you'd like to contact her, I am so sure she would love to recount old memories with you. You may email her at ma2allison@comcast.net.

God Bless!
