Is this Fairfax County tax in addition to the state sales tax on vehicles that I've been hearing about? I'm moving to the area this weekend and will need to switch everything over.

Yes. It is a property tax.

Sorry to sound stupid - but how do you pay this? I got the paperwork to register our cars with the county, which I just did online. Nothing came up about paying the tax. Will they bill me?

It's been awhile since I lived in Fairfax, but as I recall they usually bill you. I looked online and saw this:

"Failure to receive (property tax) forms does not exempt you from either the obligation to file or pay taxes on time. Forms may be obtained at the Government Center or by calling 703-222-8234 [TTY: 703-222-7594] or may be downloaded from Tax Forms*- Fairfax County, Virginia

I've never had to deal with a car tax, and now that I'm a VA resident I'm wishing I had researched it a bit better before. I have a hypothetical:

- I buy a new car for $45,000
- I assume that means that its assessed value is $45,000
- $3000 is fully subsidized
- $17,000 is subsidized at 67% (so I pay 33% of the 5% due in Arlington, or $280.50)
- $25,000 is all me (so I pay another $1,250)
- My total car tax is $1,520.50 per year?

This can't be right, can it? That'd be like paying MORE than the sales tax every year (since sales tax on new cars is only 3%).

No, that doesn't seem right. The car is assessed at every $100 value.

Actually, you might not be far off. I just looked up Arlington's rate and it looks like it is $5.00 for every $100 assessed value. So $45,000 divided by 100 is 450, times $5 is $2,250 which is your tax for the year. I believe after the tax relief, the bill to the owner would be about $765 for the year.

Arlington's rate is higher than Fairfax's? Wow, I didn't know that. For some reason I thought Fairfax was the highest.

Yes. $5 for every $100 of value. Which is 5%.

Can someone who has a nice new car chime in and verify that the car tax will such a high amount? That just seems ridiculous.

Yes, the personal property tax on a $45K car would be well over a grand a year, for several years. But you have to look at the big picture...the OVERALL tax burden in VA is not terribly bad....less than many States.

I personally like taxes like the car tax because it's one of the few that one can mitigate....by owning a cheaper car. Investing $45K in a rapidly depreciating asset like a car is insane, IMO...but to each his own. That said, I'm sure glad that antique vehicles are exempt from the car tax....I inherited a '67 427 Corvette coupe that is worth around $100K...man, that would be a bitter pill to swallow! LOL
