Default Best Bang for the Buck - Farragut West and Anacostia Commute

We are renting in Fairfax right now. My wife commutes to Farragut West on the orange and I will be commuting to Anacostia in 2010 ( I drive to Crystal City currently, but job is moving in 2 yrs.) We are looking at purchasing our first home, but trying to determine the best bang for our buck is so hard.

We are looking at the 300K to 400K range. 400 can get us a cheap SFH in Herndon (20170), but only a condo or sketchy TH in Vienna/Falls Church or inside the beltway.

Both of us can tolerate < 1 hr commute. Anything over is crazy, so Prince William County and Loudon are too far.

Basically, where in Virginia or Maryland can you get the absolute best bang for your buck when using factors like safety, commute to DC(less than 1 hour), resale-ability, etc? Are there areas in MD worth looking at? PG county seems to universally have a bad rep. Does Montgomery Co compare to Fairfax? We both grew up in Fairfax Co and really don't know much else. Please lend us some suggestions for the best bang for our buck for ~350K.

Thanks in advance!
