Hi there -

Husband and I are moving to Del Ray in Alexandria. Am wondering what the best bank is in the area - we're looking for one that has a lot of ATMs. Thanks!

Chris

Someone earlier mentioned a bank which pays you back the fees you pay at other ATM's. I think it was Chevy Chase or PNC Bank. As far as ease of use and less BS on their websites, Wachovia is #1.

Chevy Chase also has ATM's at National and Dulles Airport. They also have extended hrs. on Saturday ( I am sure lot of others do). If you travel a lot then BoA.

ING Direct is the best bank, that I have ever dealt with. Thousands of ATMs. They worked in Laos, even. Also, they have six month CDs paying 3.3% right now. Better than anything Fidelity has.

ING has about a million of them, because you can use any Allpoint ATM for free.

I was considering getting a checking account with them and they had more than 30 within a 5 mile radius of me.

Default Banks around DC...

While we liked CHASE in NY, we didn't like Chevy Chase (they're unrelated), amongst other things due to the several times we were charged fees that were not supposed to be charged and then the hassles of getting the money back... horrible customer service IMHO. Have heard similiar things about SunTrust.
I don't know ING bank personally...
Citi Bank let's you use all 7/11 ATMs for free, so you can get money anywhere in the US really, plus they are wide-spread internationally. Customer service is good.
HSBC Bank is a bank that will refund you all fees charged at ANY ATM - in the world! ... if you are a 'Premier customer' - you can check on their website if that would be for you.
It really depends on what you want from a bank, besides the ATMs....

The most ATMs by far is Chevy Chase.

They advertise on TV with a Ben Franklin-look alike saying: The most atms from Downtown to Germantown to Georgetown to Old Town!

(I still remember the catchy jingle after being in England for three months...lol).

Let me see...20 million customers Worldwide, the World's largest direct savings bank, but they don't give you a place to go stand in line to speak with a foreigner about the mysterious fees on your statement (that they probably charged you 3 bucks to send to you in the first place). BTW, there are 306 ATMs (FREE) within a 20 mile radius of Alexandria, VA. 32,000 ATMs in the 50 States; America's largest surcharge free ATM network.
