We own a house in Manassas on acreage with no HOA. We have always had dogs, but we couldn't figure out what to fence. Fencing all 3 acres would be structurally difficult and expensive; or should we define a "backyard" and fence that? One person I know on acreage bought a house with a huge dog run (huge, like a half an acre) tha was about 20 feet away from the house and that seemed to work well for them, at least for the dog issue. But to answer the original question, you may very well need to plan to build a fence once you find the right house, making sure before you buy the house that you can do what you want to do ... (a good realtor can help).
