I have to "beg to differ" - when I commute on Metro, I see MANY military folks and they aren't outgoing at all. If there is a group, they talk amongst themselves - if it is an individual, they are connected to an IPod/MP3 player and/or talking on the cell phone. I'm a smiler (as in acknowledge the day/good morning, etc.) - and NOTHING in return.

How many people are outgoing on the Metro period? If you measure friendliness by behavior while commuting, you'll be disappointed every time. People dont exactly ride Metro to make new friends. They are too worried about their lives and that may be the only calm time during their day. When i rode Metro my focus was on not getting jumped and making my bus in time, now i drive home and my focus is on not getting killed by these crazy drivers.
With the war and PTSD going on, can you really judge military folk for not being outgoing, if indeed it is true?

For the most part, Metro is a place where people go in the morning to commute to a place where they're not that excited about. And then at the end of they day, they're exausted after being at a place they hate, and they're commuting back home.
Most people are not going to be very friendly in these circumstances. Especially when 90% of the rest of the people are in the same boat.
For the people that hate it, please come to a realization, and please move to your hickville and hee haw your way to your corn field or tractor and smile and show off all your missing teeth.
No disrespect, but to the people that hate Nova, then where is it exactly that you like. I'm sure it's hickville Alabama. But you're going to find more people in NoVa that hate hickville Alabama more than they hate Nova.
Each to their own. If you're country/redneck and hate diversity, then of course you're going to hate NoVa. Just like the people who love diversity hate hickville.
Now if there was a fun event somewhere in DC and the majority of the people were heading out to that event using metro, then it would be a totally different scenario. People are going to friendly and outgoing.

Funny you should post this, my hubby just made this comment tonight about the difference in the metro during the week and on the weekends. He said the metro was so quiet during the week, noone talked or made eye contact and then on the weekends it was a totally different ride. The kids and I never rode the metro with the working crowd, we only rode on the weekends or in the evenings and it got pretty crazy especially on July 4th. My husband said he didn't want anyone making conversation with him as he was either preparing for his day or winding down and trying not to bring his work home with him.
I have to say I was so shocked when we got to the outskirts of NOVA coming from TN to see all the trees and how green it was. In my infinite stupidness I guess I was thinking as we were driving through VA that when we got to NOVA that suddenly the trees, mountains and green that I was seeing would just all disappear. My perception of both NOVA and DC before I got there was this metropolitian area with big buildings and no grass instead I got trees, green grass and flowers. This was amazing for me coming from the desert southwest where it is brown, brown and yet more brown.
I know being there for a mere 5 wks has in no way prepared me for life in NOVA especially considering we were there on temporary assignment on the gov'ts dime and if we move there things will be different. We probably won't have the luxury of living near a metro and my hubby will have to commute at least an hour or more but for us it is only an 18 month commitment and a chance for our kids to experience alot of things most people don't ever get to experience. So at the end of the 18 months I maybe screaming to get out but I won't know until I try it. I know alot of people who hate where I live now and would give anything to be able to leave. Life if what you make it.

Well actually there ALLOT of places a whole lot better than Northern Virginia that aren’t considered hickville Alabama. (Im from Fairfax/Alexandria area) To name a few for ya ...
To be honest I would prefer most of Delaware vs. Northern Virginia.
And these places….
Humboldt, CA (People are actually nice!!!)
San Diego, CA
Denver, CO
Outer Banks, NC
Raleigh, NC
Asheville, NC
Charlotte, NC (Big city, small town feel)
Louisville, KY
St. Augustine, FL
Hollywood, FL
Tampa, FL
There are allot of places I would prefer vs. NOVA as far as my opinion goes, I mean that’s why im living in SW, VA now and planning to move to Florida. I didn’t add any mid-west cities because I would rather live in NOVA, I lived in Saint Louis for 2 years and couldn’t stand it, never again. (My personal feelings)

I live in Newington (off of Telegraph Road near Fort Belvoir). My community is VERY FRIENDLY...with neighborhood parties, folks watching each others houses when on vacation, pitching in to shovel snow at elderly residents homes and much more. We have one neighbor who distributes dog biscuits to all of the neighbors pets when they do their evening walk. Probably half of my community serves in leadership positions in their church, scouts, etc.
I have lived in VA all of my life (raised in Newport News) and find my part of Fairfax County still showing southern hospitality.

That has nothing to do with it. And stop bashing Alabama. Folks from Alabama have more class than New Yorkers any day. People like you are the ones who talk about diversity, then go and bash another group.
BTW, Most people from NOVA you describe are boring, plastic, uncreative conventional people who like to watch the Washington Redskins in their vinyl sided houses, after a night out at TGI Friday's. Followed by another stimulating afternoon of washing off their SUV and taking little Jason to soccer practice, or going to the local Starbucks and slurping up a lattee while reading "The Post". Ah, yes, how wonderfully superior is that of NOVA. Thats why I HATED growing up in NOVA, and couldn't wait to get the hell out of there to Richmond.

What?? You make absolutely no sense? You're an absolute dumbazz to generalize most people in NoVa the way you do. Please stay in Richmond. Richmond sucks! It's so old, dingy, and ugly looking. It depresses me just driving through that place. I wonder how people can live in a place like Richmond. I know I'll get bashed by the people who like Richmond, but I could care less because I know well how I feel about it and no comment whatsoever would change my mind about it.
You're right, about one thing - minus rednecks, I do like diversity.
To me Nova is great because of the close access to DC, and Baltimore, as well as other close by places - Philly, NYC, Atlantic City, VA Beach, and so on. Of course love the diversity.
