I have lived in VA all of my life (raised in Newport News) and find my part of Fairfax County still showing southern hospitality.
Actually if i had to be stuck in fairfax county, that would be the part i would most likely pick (of course FAR away from Rt. 1.) I think if i had to exclude one neighborhood from the famous NoVA bad attitudes Newington/Telegraph Rd would probably be it. A lot of folks from my church live in that area and they are great people. Maybe they are a product of that neighborhood.

We are 8 months into an 18 month and the stress of the commute is definitely NOT worth it. Live as close as possible to make your husbands live liveable. It is said over and over on this board and it cannot be said enough. An hour+ commute each way will really take a toll...

Thanks for this, we have finally decided if we decide to put in for the job we will have to give up somethings we are used to now in exchange for being able to cut his commute. That has been my fear all along was the amount of time he would be gone from home, when you normally work a 10-12 hr day then throw an hour+ commute in, I am sure it gets old.

Other than the commuting are you enjoying life in NOVA? I want to be as well informed as possible when we finally sit down to make this decision.

I know I'll get bashed by the people who like Richmond, but I could care less because I know well how I feel about it and no comment whatsoever would change my mind about it.

You're right, about one thing - minus rednecks, I do like diversity.

To me Nova is great because of the close access to DC, and Baltimore, as well as other close by places - Philly, NYC, Atlantic City, VA Beach, and so on. Of course love the diversity.
You sound lke you only like the kind of "diversity" that suits yourself. You sound very hateful and judgemental.

I have lived in Richmond for 11 years, and my parents are from Richmond

Cuturally Richmond trumphs NOVA. We have a great live music scene, art galleries, hipsters, creative people, and Richmond is a beautiful city.
You have obviously never been on Monument Ave or Church Hill or Maymont Park. Its not ugly at all.

The architecture in Richmond is stunning. Richmonders are hip and cool

I realize I am generalizing here, but NOVA people are well, for the most part bland and vanilla. Its not their fault- They are stuck in the rat race of DC.

They like their Starbucks on every corner, and chain restaurants, and Washington Redskins, and SUVs.

The culture of NOVA is zilch. It used to be a great area- but now NOVA has no culture. It lacks personality

Fairfax City makes me want to cry !

Here in Richmond we dont need DC. Are are our own little DC. And its great.

We actually have Southern charm here. NOVA is dull and depressing. Its just one big strip mall.

I dont see how you could like that. And BTW- they have plenty of "rednecks" up North. Try Vermont, or Western Mass or Upstate New York.

BTW, I hate to break it to you, but yes, NOVA is South.

Haaahaaa haaahaaa. I bet you're a standup comedian in Richmond.

I don't have time right now to respond to you fully, but will sometime soon.

Haaahaaa hahahaha!

Mr. Richmonder, so I sound hateful and judgmental, huh? If I’m that, then why would I like diversity? Why would I like a place where there are people from all over the world? I don’t like most rednecks because they don’t have respect for anyone, even their own kind. Most rednecks only look for their type and spread ignorant hate to everything else. They don’t even care about their own health. No wonder most rednecks are fat, have no style, and look nasty. Or they’re a scrawny chew dipping drunks.

So your parents are from Richmond. What is so significant about that? What’s the point? My parents are from Fremont California, so who cares.

Culturally Richmond trumps Nova? I would seriously doubt that. Richmond is so small time it’s not even funny. You don’t understand how Nova is well connected to DC metro. Do you think the Redskins are a Northern Virginia team? Of course not! The Redskins stadium is in Maryland, and not even in DC. Haaaahaaa. From Nova you can catch metro to DC and Maryland – that’s how connected the DC area is to each other.

Richmonders are hip and cool? Haaahaha. That’s how I knew you were a standup comedian! I haven’t heard anything funny like that in a long time. You might have a few, but they’re probably visitors from somewhere else.
So you think Nova used to be a great place, but it’s not anymore? I think you stated that you used to live in a far suburb in Nova a long time ago. So what you are basically saying is that you like a small town. If that’s the case, I respect that. But don’t bash a place because it doesn’t have a small Richmond feel.

Lastly, you think Nova is a large stripmall, huh? Well, I’ll post some photos.

I need to learn how to attach several photos in one page like other posts I've seen. I have many more, but it is taking up a little too much of my time.
