Default Commute from lorton to crystal city?

I've accepted a job in Crystal City. I've looked at homes in Alexandria but I think I get a better value in Lorton. What can I expect from the commute from Lorton to Crystal City? Is it convenient to a metro or will I need to drive? How long will each take?

You should be able to slug from Lorton to the Pentagon, and take a local bus at the Pentagon to Crystal City. Or walk from the Pentagon to your office, depending on the building location. Google Lorton slug line.

I would really consider how much of a value you are getting in Lorton vs. Alexandria due to increased fuel consumption (I guess not so much if you do public transport) and TIME. The carpool lanes between the Pentagon and Lorton are OK, but 95 South between the Beltway and Lorton can be horrible even outside of rush hours. Is this the worst commute in the DC area? By far no....but I'd at least do a test run so you can truly be sure that the extra money you are saving/the more house you can buy is truly worth it to you.

If it were me I'd do the VRE. There are stops in Lorton and Crystal City. It'd be probably about 30 minutes. It can be a little pricey, but if you factor in gas and parking then it's probably not that bad.

Other options would be to drive (which would probably not be enjoyable), slug (informal carpools to get into an HOV lane), or you could drive to Springfield, park, and take the blue line metro from there to Crystal City. The worst part of the drive would be getting past Springfield, it's always chaos around there.

VRE is pricey and about 35 mins, Metro is not worth it the parking is expensive(unless your company is paying), slugging is a great option, driving yourself is about 35-45 min.

It won't let me edit for some reason, but I forgot to include a website about slugging:
