Considered one of the best in the country now.
Well, not exactly. The law school, maybe. In the top 50. The university as a whole is a respectable regional institution, but is nowhere close to UVa, William and Mary, or Va Tech in national rankings.

That Final Four appearance a couple years ago sure put 'lil ole GMU on the map, didn't it?
I happened to be on campus the weekend of August 23/24 when the new students were moving in....and I was AMAZED at the huge number of out-of-state license plates I saw!
GMU is not a "commuter school" anymore!
I just wish somebody would make them fix that traffic light at Braddock & Roanoke River! It favors GMU traffic WAY, WAY too much!

GMU is definitely not an elite school in the country by any means, but they sure are improving. Recently got US News #1 spot for Up and Coming colleges of 2008.
I'd say in 10 years, they are going to succeed V. Tech as Virginia's 3rd best public institution.
Also, the ratings that you read really mean absolutely nothing. Most are based on endowment and big name proffs. that get recruited there, and the simple fact of having famous engin. and medical programs.

UNVA is a univery in Manassas V.A.
One can't compare this university with Mason because Mason is typically for studies and UNVA is not good for studies.
The basic purpose to open this university is to provide the CPT program right from the starting of the course which will give the status of working full time job anywhere in US.
Students come here from India and also from some part of US (Whoever want to come and maintain his/her status). Its only a business.
The University campus is very small. The complete campus is esatblished in 5 small rooms building.
My advise is if one is coming US only for studies then dont take admission in this university. Best of luck

GMU better than VT? Depends on what your going to school for, I guess. Both GMU and VT have very good business programs.
VT is the best engineering school in the state, though. It is also tops for Veterinary medicine.

I said in 10 years. Right now, the hat tips off to Vtech then JMU then GMU for overall academic quality. And the new engineering buildings at GMU look promising, atleast that's what I've been told.

Never heard of UNVA
I would go with the one people have actually heard of, Mason.

GMU may have a very good engineering dept in 10 years but I would be very surprised if it could surpass VT in that amount of time....
It will be interesting to see how everything evolves.

^ Well, whether the recruitment of jobs for companies outside of Virginia are more abundant at Tech then say GMU, a large amount of Vtech grads live in northern va. so they are competing for jobs that are 5-15 miles away from GMU. Location, location, location.
Now if you were to argue on who would have more academic success between the two, I'd give it to V. tech.
