Hi all,

My wife and I are considering a move from NC to VA next year. She would like to complete her residency at UVa, and I can take a job transfer to Warrenton. We have 3 school age children.

Any thoughts on good family friendly towns between Charlottesville and Warrenton? We will try to split the distance on the commute, but it would be better if her drive is shorter than mine. Any current information on the Rte 29N traffic conditions heading into Warrenton in the morning?

Thanks for any advice!

The Gainesville/Haymarket area would work well. In the morning there is virtually no traffic headed west towards Warrenton and you can get to Centreville fairly quickly from here.

Thanks David. I should have specified Charlottesville instead of trying to abrieviate! I'll go back and edit.

I drive Rt. 29 on a fairly regular basis, normally from Warrenton down as far as the Madison vicinity. For the first time in years, last weekend I went down to Lovingston and back. I was horrified at what Rt. 29 has become on the north side of Charlottesville: mile after mile of mindless retail sprawl and traffic congestion to rival NOVA. Don't get me wrong, I like Charlottesville, Warrenton, and many of the town between, but there's nothing like mind-boggling traffic to ruin an otherwise nice day.

Back to your question. 29 north into Warrenton is not as bad though it bogs down where U.S. 17 joins and there's more stoplights all the time throughout the 29 corridor, esp. around Culpeper and Brandy Station. Several towns seem appealing incl. Madison and Ruckersville.

There may also be some ways to avoid Rt. 29 north of C'ville, e.g., living along the Rt. 20 corridor (Barboursville) or the Rt. 15 corridor (Gordonsville). That way the missus could get to the campus via these highways perhaps to I-64,while you could head north and rejoin Rt. 29. I don't know these areas quite as well so perhaps someone will offer further advice.

No problem...someone else who lives in the area might have a better area, but you might try Culpeper or Madison.

Thanks for the advice all. We'll take a closer look in Greene, Orange and Madison counties.
