Default 20 Great things to do in NOVA in October

New to NOVA? Autumn is a great time to be here. Here are just a few ideas to make October special:

1. Waterford Historic Home Tour Oct. 3-5. Also, Reston has a cool homes tour--check out the mod 60's architecture.
2. Fall Wine Festival at Mount Vernon Oct. 3-5.
3. Concerts at Reston Town Center. I know Buckwheat Zydeco will be there Oct. 5, check their web site for others.
4. Multicultural Festival, Woodbridge. October 11.
5. Fall Wildlife Festival, Woodbridge. October 11.
6. Leesburg Corn Maize is open all month. Also, Leesburg has Haunted Tours, and a variety of other fall activities.
7. Murder Mystery at Gadsby Tavern. October 11.
8. Clifton Days. October 12.
9. Craftsman's Classic Art Show at the Expo Center.
10. Loudoun County Color Tour October 18-19.
11. Flying Karamazov Brothers at Wolftrap. This is a hoot! October 21-22.
12. Boo at the Zoo is Oct. 23.
13. Heritage Trail Bike Ride October 24.
14. Autumn Apple Festival, Sterling October 25.
15. Pumpkin Glow Night, Bluemont. October 25.
16. Big Apple Circus at Dulles Town Center!
17. Pumpkinville Festival, Leesburg, last week of October.
18. Coldplay is at the Verizon Center 10-31. Be sure to check out all the concerts at the Verison Center, there's suusally something interesting.
19. Halloween Storyfest, Claude Moore Park, October 31.
20. Take a hike--NOVA is laced with all sorts of great bike trails and hiking trails. My favorite--park at Riverbend Park and hike south to Great Falls National Park.

There are also plenty of autumn events within an easy drive... for example Fear Fest at King's Dominion.

Excellent post! I'm new to NOVA and have been wondering what things to do and see. Being a young single dude it gets quite boring just sitting around the apartment all day.

Somebody just asked me where the Expo Center is. It's in Chantilly, near the intersection of 28 and Willard.

Try googling Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. They have a website that gives directions, and lists events for almost every weekend. The Big Flea is a favorite of mine, also the home show in February. All the local garden centers build "gardens" of potted daffodils and other spring plants--even potted flowering cherry trees. It's quite a site and just smelling all those flowers puts me in a good mood because by then I'm ready for winter to end.

What kinds of things do you like to do? We can probably come up with some suggestions.

A good resource for young singles is a magazine called On Tap. On Tap Magazine | Home

They have an amazing list of things to do around the area, all geared for young singles.

Another suggestion: go to a local high school football game. High school games are a lot more fun to watch than the pros (IMO).

Or, try out a few clubs in your area. Whatever you're interested in there's a club that caters to it. A lot of people join choirs in Virginia (and if you like to sing, find a group that holds a concert at the Kennedy Center). Running clubs also seem to be big. Toastmasters is very big in Virginia, and a good way to meet people (although I'm not sure it's where the singles hang out, LOL).

There's a new sports bar at the corner of Lowes Island Blvd. and Algonkian Parkway called Velocity Five. I saw a lot of young singles there today--looks like a fun place to hang out.

It's not in NoVa but we just got back from the Renaissance Festival in Crownsville MD, that's always fun, the place is HUGE and you can spent the day there easily (about 1 hr. drive).

The Ghost Walk should be soon in Old Town also, that's interesting and you might meet up w/some folks. (I think it goes on all the time actually, but I think fall and close to Halloween are the best times to go).
