Hi,

I have read many posts for and against sending a child who missed the age cutoff for Kindergarten. As the mother of my child, I feel she is ready. I have searched and called many private schools in Fairfax, VA but all these schools follow the FCPS kindergarten age cutoff. Does anyone know of any private schools who will bend on the age cutoff? Thanks.

I have heard that the private schools around here are as strict as FCPS in regards to the cutoff for K. I know that The Falls Church Day School has an accredited Kindergarten but am not sure about the cutoff.

I'd agree that most private schools are strict in regards to the cutoff. You might consider a pre-k that goes almost full time. Last year we did that for daughter and she went 4 days a week 9:30-1:30. Just a thought. St. Mary's on Sideburn in Fairfax offers a GREAT program.

Also know that red-shirting for kindergarten is neary rampant in this area. My nephew was in a class with lots of kids 12-18 months older.

My wife used to teach at a private school. Parents would have their kids in kindergarten at the private school and then be really upset the following year when FCPS wouldn't enroll them in first grade because of their age.
