Hello, My girlfriend and I are relocating sight unseen from El Paso, Texas to the area for a job in about 2 weeks. I will be working in Arlington, 2 blocks from Rosslyn Station. We have a 6 pound dog that will be coming along later, and I am ok with up to a 30-40 minute commute by metro. We can spend $1600 or less for a place, and ideally there would be some restaurants and bars in the area. Perfectly, an Irish pub. My girlfriend will be looking to attend school in the fall, and will be looking for a part time job, maybe tending bar, or working as a waitress. Urban, eclectic, safe...Cheaper is better!?

$1600 should do you well here. Not every place accepts dogs, but you will find places if you look hard enough for sure.

There are TONS of Irish pubs here--not like Boston or Dublin of course, but Old Town Alexandria, Arlington and DC have a pretty good supply.

If you ever want Tex-Mex, check out Austin Grill which has several DC area locations. We also have Anita's for New Mexico style Mexican food.

Arlington is very urban, eclectic and safe. With your budget, you should be able to find a 1BR in Clarendon or Ballston, all on the Orange Line, a few stops west of Rosslyn.

Best of luck--sounds like you will like it here!

CaseyMac is right, Arlington is a great place, and with that budget, you should be fine. I love Arlington, and wouldn't live in DC if someone paid me! lol.. If you're staying more than 6 mos, you'll have to register w/the State of VA (we have State income tax) and Arlington County. There is a state vehicle inspection and also a yearly vehicle tax for Arlington County.

You can look it all up on the Arlington County wepage, but it's not too bad. Street parking in Arlington can be tricky tho and you'll need a county sticker to park on the street, b/c they love to give tickets and they're not cheap! They start at $50.00 and go up from there. When you come into town, take a close look at the parking signs, alot of streets swap sides from morning parking to evening parking.

VA DMV and Arlington Co. are much easier to deal w/than DC Gov't, let me tell you...

Good luck and I'm sure you'll love DC - it's a great place

I should say that you need a county sticker to park on "most" streets in Arlington Co. - some streets you have to move your car from one side of the street to the other at a certain time. Just be on the look out for the signs!

Barton`s crossing in Alexandria is a dog friendly community. Not far from Old town Alexandria where all the bars are. 1 mile away from the metro. Better then others around it.
