Hello all, I am trying to get a feel for the areas of Western NOVA i.e. Bristow, Haymarket, Manassas, Centerville, and Gainesville. I will work in Chantilly (intersection 28 and 50) and I am seeing some sub $400K foreclosures and such in these areas. How are the schools, medical care, commute to Chantilly, crime, quality of life in general. I am coming from Southeast Fl, so do not even hit me with weather issues, I know what I am in for.

Thank you.

I have friends in Haymarket (Dominion Valley), Haymarket off of 234, Gainesville (all kinds of parts), and definitely Bristow (Braemar, Victory Lakes, those new parts of Braemar, etc.). Everyone I know is honestly just really happy there. I would imagine you would like these places best (especially Braemar) if you have kids and want a lot of community and ready-made social networks. [Like, I know people who would never want to live in Braemar, who wanted more space and land and privacy]. My friends were happy with the elementary schools and access to medical care is not a problem. Beyond elementary schools I'm really not sure since I was focused on preschools and kindergartens. There's definitely a flip side - somehow everyone in these neighborhoods seemed to think they were at some extremely high social strata - have they never heard of McLean and Potomac? But that's probably typical - neither here nor there. As far as the commute, I know that the folks in Braemar were having a hard time with getting out of the community onto the larger roads (although this was all being addressed and I've been gone a year now). A lot of Haymarket has very easy access to 66 so might be an easier commute? Gainesville should be an OK commute to Chantilly either on 29 or 66. But generally speaking, you're on the right track commute-wise, depending on the specific house.

I work in Chantilly at the same intersection!

Bristow (don't know much about here sorry)

Haymarket (seems really nice, affordable housing, not heard anything bad about schools out there)

Manassas (probably the one place in NoVA I wouldn't move to - too many bad neighborhoods to watch out for)

Centerville (great schools (westfields especially), we almost bought a house here. area seemed really great, had friends who lived there and loved it)

and Gainesville (everyone I know has good things to say, our company might relocated to Gainesville)
