We currently live in Arlington and we are considering moving to Oakton so that we can have more land and be closer to my parents. My husband will still work downtown (Washington Harbor) and I want to get an idea of what his commute will be like going downtown in the morning around 8:30-8:45 am (he comes home late so that won't be an issue). We have a hybrid car so he could use the HOV lanes. If he were to commute without the hybrid and drove down around 9:15-9:30 how long do you estimate it would take?
We might test it out ourselves but thought it would be good to hear from someone who does it frequently.
Thanks!

I live in Reston and use the Toll Road (Hunter Mill) and I-66 HOV to Thomas Circle. I leave Reston at 7:45 and get to the office at 8:30-8:35 most days. The later you go the slower it gets. I recently left at 9:00 and it was 10:10 before I got to the office.

I-66 inside the beltway immediately jams at 9:01am around Route 7 through to Ballston/Route 120, as all the non-HOV/hybrid vehicles swarm in. Driving in at 9:15 from Oakton will probably take an hour to get fully into DC for that reason. Definitely worth using the hybrid, and hit the HOV-only part before 9am.

Taking the metro from Vienna to Foggy Bottom could also be an option or does he require the use of a car while in DC?

How far will you be from Rt 66? The roads in Oakton get very backed up in the morning. Depending on where the house is located, it could take 20 to 30 minutes to get to Rt.66.

Christine you're going to be closer to your parents, but your poor husband will loose his sanity. Not only that he works a lot of hours, but now has to commute more. Even if you have a bigger yard, does hubby actually have time to take care of it?
